List of Bible Books

Introduction

Welcome to our List of Bible Books page.  The following tables contain a separate list of Old Testament and New Testament books.

List of Bible Books – Old Testament

The Old Testament is comprised of 39 books in the Protestant Bible.  The Catholic Bible includes seven additional books within the Old Testament (Note: I have written an article on the difference between the Catholic and Protestant Bibles).

The Old Testament is largely an account of God’s dealings with Israel.  The main narrative begins with God’s call to Abraham; later Moses leads Israel in their Exodus to Egypt where the conquer the Promised Land of Canaan.  A period of the judges follows and then the establishment of the Israelite monarchy.  Thereafter, Israel is exiled from the Promised Land due to its disobedience.

Categories of Bible Books

For ease of memorization, the books of the Old Testament can be divided into four main categories: law, history, poetry / wisdom and prophetical books.  The Books of the Law incorporate the first five books of the Old Testament.

List of Bible Books – New Testament

The New Testament is comprised of 27 books in the Protestant Bible.  It is largely an account of the birth, ministry, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  The sequel to Jesus’ death is found in the Book of Acts with the formation of the Christian church and in the epistles which describe the outworking of faith in the communities that were founded by the apostles.

For ease of memorization, the books of the New Testament can be divided into four main categories: gospels, history, epistles and apocalyptic literature.
