The Bible in One Sentence!

Introduction

Welcome to our Bible summary page.

What we have attempted to do on this page is to distill or summarize the contents of the Bible into one simple sentence.

Thus the Bible tells the history of God’s salvation, on behalf of humanity and the creation, beginning with Israel and completed through Jesus Christ.

This sentence encapsulates the main theme of the Bible and highlights the Bible’s protagonists, purposes and storyline.

HistoryWe use the term “history” in our summary of the Bible because we wish to distinguish between actual historical events and myths.  The Exodus really did happen and Jesus did really rise from the dead.

Biblical history is recorded in the Old Testament with Israel as one of the principal protagonist. It is also recorded in the New Testament with Jesus Christ and the Christian church as the principal protagonists.

GodWe state that salvation belongs to God because he is the main character of the Bible. Sometimes, we make the Bible all about us.  But it is God who initiates the rescue of humanity from its bondage to sin.

SalvationWe use the term “salvation” in our summary of the Bible because this is principally what the Bible is about, God saving his people.

Humanity and Creation – We state that salvation is both for “humanity” and “the creation”. Salvation not only incorporates a person being saved to eternal life, but is meant to permeate every aspect of that person’s life: health, family, work, and society to name a few. In addition, the earth will also be “redeemed” as it were.  This means that it has intrinsic value and must be cared for.

Israel – We state that salvation began with the nation of Israel.  Israel is the principal character in the Old Testament.  God’s promise to Abraham to bless the world through him incorporated Israel as the light to all of the nations.

Jesus ChristWe state that God’s salvation of humanity and creation is completed in Jesus Christ.  His death and resurrection begin the era of restoring both humanity and creation to their rightful place.  Jesus is the climax of salvation.  He is to whom all of the Old Testament points and all of the New Testament reveals.
